We're a small Independent Production Company looking to make it
Big... but it's not about the money. Seriously, if it was, we'd
work a way through a more established company rather than fight
against all the obstacles and challenges of the most competitive
and challenging industry I have ever known.
So
why go through all of that?
DBS
Films is the latest incarnation of a singular and rare voice (and
that's official). It isIndependent Company allows that voice to
come through less scathed and less compromised. DBS Films says what
it thinks and will do always do so. At times that means our output
and on going projects are seen as less immediately commercial than
others. So be it, as a recent 'Best Of' listing clearly shows, immediate
success doesn't always mean either properly successful nor better.
DBS
doesn't pander, it makes challenging and thought provoking entertainment.
It rattles cages, and bothers the horses. Sometimes we're controversial,
we've been banned from YouTube and Babelgum and even Larry Clarke
(Kids, Bully) described an award winning film as 'a little extreme'.
On
the other hand, the same films are invited to screenings around
the world and even develop cult followings. The same film that's
been bannedand outraged has also been used more than once for thesis
source material for its purity and clear adaptation of a much praised
work of classical poetry. And
then there's the cult favourite, recently chosen in a 'best of'
selection for festival sceening.
More
than anything, DBS Films takes film seriously, not just the business
but also the art, the story and the responsibility story has to
do more than entertain. It isn't the fastest or easiest way to 'succeed'
but, ultimately, it's the only way to succeed well.
John
Le Brocq
The founding father and a real life father too. It took a while
getting here and the way through wasn't what you'd call traditional,
it was always an adventure. If at times it all got a little wild
and reckless, it was always with purpose, always towards a better
future. The road should always be an adventure, a step to the side
and into the unknown because there's always more to be learned on
the less travelled path.
I
have stories to tell. My background is the visual arts, a Freelance
Editorial Illustrator for National Newspapers I was persuaded into
Fringe Theatre as Production Designer and then Co-Writer for the
critically praised 'A-muse-meant'. This led to forming Cinderella
Productions, work as Production Designer on my first feature film
then (after Film School) a range of feature film roles including
Gaffer and Art Director (but not at the same time).
Cinderella
Productions began in Fringe Theatre then gravitated towards short
film production. The first of which was Frozen Wastelands, shot
16mm and made within the first couple of months of film school.
No, we didn't have much of a clue what we were doing but, strangely,
it felt right and turned out even better.
Cinderella
closed her doors as the founders, John and Sofia Olins, followed
different paths to greater success in Film and Television. Between
then and DBS Films, I freelanced and taught until it made sense
to have a dedicated Production Company again. Now, with an extensive
contact list of past collaborators, DBS is set for whatever comes
our way, especially some finance.
Aside
from our own projects, DBS Films is eminently suitable for a range
of commissions.
Write,
Produce, Direct, Shoot and Edit
With an extensive database of skills and talent we can take both
small and large productions all the way from script to screen and
on all formats from 35mm through HD to MiniDV and S8.
DBS
Films is available for guerilla to full production and can and has
worked with budgets from just a few pennies, to some thousand pounds
all the way to silly money.
Script
Doctor and Visual Storytelling
The two most critical elements of a film that need to be right before
you even think about shooting. This is my area of specialisation.
I have woked on a regular flow of short scripts for the last 7 years
- not least the 10 to 15 every month for London Film Academy - and
for the last couple have contributed to a range of feature length
scripts in need of some work.
It was a little over 2 years ago that I took my first very successful
commission to re-write a feature draft.
So,
while DBS Films is primarily here for its own ends, maybe along
the way we can help with yours.
